Leader Training
Welcome to Girl Scouting! By now, you’ve spoken to our service unit director about being a Girl Scout volunteer this year. The service unit adult learning facilitator’s job is to make sure that the process from deciding to be a volunteer/leader through training is a smooth one. So I want to make sure you understand what is required. If you’ve decided to become a leader here is what is required of you:
- You must complete the VOLUNTEER APPLICATION and return it to the council office. Once received, they will run a criminal background check. You need to give the 3 references to your friends/co-workers and ask that they mail them in to council as soon as possible.
- Once the background check is completed, you can begin leader training.
There are 4 components:
- GSUSA Volunteer Orientation - this course is available online.
Detailed information will be in the packet of information that council
sends you after the Volunteer application is completed.
- Troop Management 101 – this course is available as a home study or through classroom instruction. In Rockford, this course will be offered before the monthly leaders’ meeting in November and December at the Rockford United Methodist Church. A complete listing of training times and locations is available on the GSMISTS website or in the “It’s a Shore Thing” publication. Please register for this class through the GSMISTS website.
- Leadership Essentials – this course is available as a home study or through classroom instruction. At this time, the course is not being offered in Rockford, but is available at a number of locations throughout the council area. Please refer to the GSMISTS website or the “It’s a Shore Thing” publication for locations and times of this training. Please register for this class through the GSMISTS website.
- GSUSA Volunteer Orientation - this course is available online.
Detailed information will be in the packet of information that council
sends you after the Volunteer application is completed.
- Dimensions of Diversity – this course is available through classroom instruction. Again, the GSMISTS website or the “It’s a Shore Thing” publication lists times and locations of this training.
It is suggested that these trainings be completed within 90 days of receiving your approval to be a leader. However, you MUST complete the GSUSA Orientation and Troop Management 101 BEFORE meeting with girls.
Each troop must also have a First Aid/CPR trained adult registered with
the unit. This can be a parent or other registered adult OR it can be the
troop leader.
Contact the trainer with questions.
