- Find yourself with a large Brownie troop? For Kelly McLellan’s Brownie troop, they found it much easier to work on Try-its by breaking the components into different "centers" around the room. This took some planning, but the girls really enjoyed it.Often they could combine more than one try-it into the centers
- “To help each girl feel "special" at our meetings, each parent was
on a rotation to be the parent helper and to bring the after-school
snack. This gave each girl one-on-one time with her mom, she was able
to play "hostess" by serving the snack, and I never had to worry about
one of the girls forgetting to bring the snack!”
Kelly McLellan Troop 2074 - “I had a mom volunteer to bring her sewing machine to the meeting.
She attached the numbers, patches, try-its, etc during the meeting.
The other moms loved it and the girls looked great!”
Beverly Dickinson Troop 2606 - Our troop voted to take a trip to the Mall – as most 5th grade girls
would! We checked out the Libby Lu store – while it may be perfect for
some troops – we found it to be pricey and a little too grown-up.
A less expensive option was Younkers. It was FREE! We contacted the Younkers public relations coordinator at Rivertown Crossings, talked about what we wanted for the girls and booked a trip. The coordinator arranged for the girls to visit the Este Lauder cosmetic counter for a lesson on skin care and make up applications. Este Lauder even gave the girls a moisturizer and mascara!
Then it was on to a “private” fitting room where the coordinator had already set aside trendy and traditional clothes in the girl’s sizes. We talked about good fashion sense as it relates to the new trends in teen clothing – and then the girls were allowed to try the clothes on for themselves.
The brand new coordinator at the time, Heather, was very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this outing to other troops. I know of two girls who went back with their parent to purchase some items they had tried on! So I know Younkers is happy to see you too!
Sarah Ek #1394 - A fantastic Community Service idea - and the most memorable trip
for our troop was a trip to WZZM- TV13’s for an on air donation to Toys
for Tots.
The girls had created Build-a-Bears using troop funds and got to donate them during Linda Paige’s evening weather forecast. The girls were a little put out that they didn’t get to keep their Build-a-Bears when they saw how cute they turned out, but were soon cured of this feeling when they were given the chance to received such public recognition of their generosity – and how much of an impact they were making on another kid’s holiday!.
Contact WZZM to schedule your on-air date and time. We called in late November and had to turn it around in 10 days. I believe it you call earlier in November, you may get a better selection of dates/times. And don’t forget to wear your uniform (over your coat because you’ll be on the Weather Deck) and bring a sign or banner announcing your troop.
