Rockford Girl Scouts

About Rockford Girl Scouts

The Rockford Girl Scouts are a Service Unit of the Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore council. The Rockford Service Unit consists of the city of Rockford and Cannon, Courtland, Plainfield, and parts of Algoma townships. Girls registered in Rockford Public Schools, as well as Rockford Christian School, Our Lady of Consolation School, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary School, and Chandler Woods Charter Academy are all part of the Rockford Neighborhood, as well as many girls who are home schooled.

Grade Levels

Girl Scouts is for all school-age girls with activities at many levels.

  • Kindergarteners and First grade - Girl Scout Daisies.
  • Second and Third grade - Girl Scout Brownies.
  • Fourth and Fifth grade - Girl Scout Juniors.
  • Middle School girls (grades 6, 7, and 8) - Girl Scout Cadettes.
  • Ninth and Tenth grade - Girl Scout Seniors.
  • Eleventh and Twelfth grade - Girl Scout Ambassadors.

Girl Scouts earn many awards. Girl Scout Daisies earn Petals while Girl Scout Brownies earn Try-its. Girl Scout Juniors earn Badges and the Girl Scouts Cadettes through Ambassadors earn Interest Project Patches. The highest award a Girl Scout Junior can earn is the Bronze Award while the Silver Award is the highest award for the Girl Scout Cadettes. Girl Scout Seniors or Ambassadors can earn the Gold Award, the highest award for any Girl Scout (comparable to the better known Boy Scout Eagle Scout award).

Just as there are many grade levels of Scouting, there are many activity levels. Certainly the most common is the Girl Scout troop. But some girls are involved in Girl Scouting in short term after school programming. Other girls sign up for Girl Scouts to go to day camp or resident camp in the summer. Juliettes or Zip scouts are “solo” girls who do Girl Scouts on their own. Some girls come to every meeting. Some girls come to two meetings a year because of sports and other activities. All girls are welcome!

Community Activities

Rockford Girl Scouts are involved in many community activities. While they may vary each year, look for us in the Santa parade, Memorial Day parade, Start of Summer Parade, and Rockford Day Camp in the summer.

The Rockford Neighborhood sponsors many activities for the girls. Depending on the grade level of the girls, last year girls were able to participate in:

  • Father/Daughter hayride,
  • Luau dance,
  • Teddy Bear Tea,
  • overnight at the WWW YMCA,
  • backpacking on South Manitou Island,
  • Spa Night,
  • International Thinking Day,
  • Neighborhood Campout and more.

Please check on the Calendar link to see the most current events for this year!

Community Service

Girl Scouts also means community service. Rockford Girl Scouts give back to the community at both the Troop and the Service Unit level. Last year, the Rockford Neighborhood Service Unit, through volunteer efforts, supported Ronald McDonald House, Goodwill, and Relay for Life. Girl Scout troops participated in many different service projects to their schools, the Girl Scout community, and their larger community, including:

  • Hug a Bear
  • North Rockford Middle School landscaping project
  • Journaling events for children in Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids, Casa de la Paz, Make a Wish Foundation, and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital
  • Kids Food Basket
  • Think Pink
  • Kent County Humane Society
  • North Kent Service Center
  • Rockford Day Camp
